Keynote Speaker: Leslie Goldman
Leslie's first book Locker Room Diaries: The Naked Truth About Women, Body Image, and Re-imagining the "Perfect" Body, was featured on the Today Show, and she has visited many college and university campuses, delivering her talk on women, confidence and body image to audiences of up to 2500.
Leslie Goldman is a writer, author, and body image speaker. Leslie earned her Masters in Public Health at the University of Illinois-Chicago and her Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she was recently named to the inaugural University of Wisconsin Forward Under 40 list.
Gail Hall has been a therapist treating eating disorders since 1986. In 1998, she founded the Comprehensive Treatment for Eating Disorders. CTED provides high quality treatment in an intimate, personalized setting. Gail has a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Western Michigan University; a Diplomate in Clinical Social Work from NASW; and is a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist and Approved Supervisor through the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals.
Gail has been affiliated with the National Eating Disorders Association since early in her career, and is passionate about the idea of raising awareness and increasing prevention efforts for eating disorders. In 2011, she then founded the Michigan Eating Disorders Alliance, a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to that goal, along with decreasing stigma for those who suffer. Gail is thrilled to be partnering with WCSG for Seeing You!! Body shaming needs to STOP!
Raeanne Niemer is the owner and director of Get emPowered Fitness Studio in Jenison Michigan. She is also the creator of “Are You Enough?, an 8 week empowerment course focusing on self-acceptance, self-love, positive body image and happiness. Her 30 years of fitness experience, 11 years of massage therapy experience and her own self-exploration to acceptance and wholeness equip her to work with others who struggle with these same issues.
Baylin Riva is a graduate student pursuing her Masters in Social Work and will be graduating in the spring. She is also very excited to be given the opportunity to be a part of the Seeing You panel. Baylin has struggled with body image for many years and has experienced some dark moments in her life because of societal pressures. However, she is proud to say that she has come a long way in her journey. Baylin looks forward to sharing her story and connecting with others who may have similar ones at the Seeing You event.
Val Lego is an Emmy Award winning health reporter for WZZM 13. In her eight years of covering health and fitness in our community, she has reported on stories ranging from medical breakthroughs in Parkinson’s, Cancer research happening on the Medical Mile to amazing stories of courage and perseverance in recovery, weight loss and fitness. Val doesn’t just research the best ways for you to stay healthy, she also lives them. She’s run the Fifth Third Riverbank Run 25k, practices yoga and enjoys trying the new health trends in Grand Rapids from flying yoga, to Crossfit and Hula dancing. Honored with three fellowships from the Association for Health Care Journalists, she continues to look deeper into the issues that concern the health of West Michigan.
